Equine Influenza

Equine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection, although it is rarely fatal. The infection is caused by two subtypes of influenza A viruses, H7N7 and H3N8. The virus can be spread by direct contact with an infected animal or by contact with infected clothing, equipment or environments. The virus often spreads through groups of horses in aerosolized droplets produced by coughing. Clinical signs of infection include fever, a harsh dry cough and nasal discharge.
