Feline Immunodeficiency

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that infects the immune system of felines. The virus is shed in saliva and is primarily transmitted through bite wounds, though the virus can also be passed from mother to kitten in utero or through infected milk. In the first stage of infection, clinical signs include fever and swelling of the lymph nodes. Once infected, a feline can go years without marked illness. Signs of FIV infection can include poor coat condition, persistent fever, stomatitis, gingivitis, diarrhea, skin infections, respiratory infections, eye conditions or weight loss. Cats infected with FIV are also more prone to various kinds of cancer and blood diseases.
