Swine Influenza

Swine influenza virus (SIV) is a key concern for the pork industry. SIV — referred to as “swine flu” or “flu” — can be caused by a number of different swine influenza strains. SIV has evolved from a seasonal disease caused by a stable genotype of SIV to a year-round, endemic respiratory disease caused by multiple SIV genotypes undergoing continuous change. This, coupled with the fact that the disease is characterized by nearly 100% morbidity, makes this one of the most challenging diseases for today’s swine operations. Swine influenza virus causes respiratory disease characterized by coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge and elevated temperatures, and can in some instances be associated with reproductive disorders such as abortion. Clinical signs and nasal shedding can begin within 24 hours of infection.

FluDETECT® Swine

Sample Type: Nasal samples | Test Time: Approximately 15 minutes

Influenza Type A viruses can infect swine and subtypes H1N1 and H3N2 viruses are associated with disease in swine. The FluDETECT® Swine influenza virus (SIV) Type A antigen test kit is a Rapid Immuno Migration (RIM™) test designed to aid in the qualitative detection of SIV type A virus in nasal samples from pigs. Positive results may be submitted to a reference lab for confirmation and subtype determination. Negative results indicate no detectable SIV is present.
