Dirofilaria immitis (Heartworm)

Heartworm disease in dogs and cats is caused by the transmission of the parasite Dirofilaria immitis through the bite of infected mosquitoes. When fully grown in the host dog or cat the worms can be up to a foot long, and are found in the right side of the heart and pulmonary arteries where they can cause lung disease and heart failure.
